Hello,
The popular belief in the recovery world is that if someone is struggling, the next step is obvious: send them to rehab.
It’s the treatment people reach for first, not because it’s necessarily the best fit, but because it’s the most familiar tool in the recovery toolbox. It’s the hammer.
Hammers are powerful. They’re designed to drive things in, hold things together, and create stability. For some people, a 30-day rehab program does exactly that. It provides structure, consistency, and a clear break from the chaos.
But a hammer isn’t gentle. It can shatter things if the surface isn’t ready. It can split what it was meant to hold. And when the real issue is emotional, relational, or deeply rooted in trauma, a hammer only drives it in deeper.
That’s the damage done when care is presented as “customized,” but never truly adapted. It assumes everyone’s pain can be met with the same force, even when what’s needed is something far more gentle, or completely different. Offering different-sized hammers doesn’t mean you have different tools, just more of the same.
At Recovery Consultants, we believe in reaching for the right tool at the right time.
Some people don’t need to be “nailed down.” They need space to loosen what’s been held in for years. Like pliers gently untangling old knots of grief, trauma, or family dynamics.
Others need a clean, fresh surface. Not punishment or pressure, but compassion, like a soft cloth wiping off the parts they’ve hidden in shame.
And some need precision, like a small screwdriver, to tighten the tiny screws that hold their daily life together: childcare, housing, and work. They don’t need to be pulled out of their life. They need help within it.
True healing doesn’t come from reaching for the same tool over and over again. It comes from learning what’s actually needed and offering support that fits.
You are not too resistant.
You are not too broken. You may have just been handed the wrong tool [without someone helping you figure out the user’s manual].
If you or someone you love is starting to question what recovery could look like, we’re here to meet you with a different approach.
