Mirror! Mirror! ON THE WALL!

Hello,

One of the most powerful lessons I ever received from a mentor was this quote:

“The degree to which a person can grow is directly proportional to the amount of truth they can accept about themselves, without running away.”

Now pause, and let that sink in for a second.

It’s not how much you do, how hard you try, or how many tools you have in your recovery toolbox. Just how much truth you’re willing to face and how much self-compassion you can bring to the parts of you that you don’t want to look at.

The people we help at Recovery Consultants aren’t lazy or unmotivated. Many have been doing “the work” when they come to us. They’re exhausted from doing “the work”. And yet still, they’re stuck.

Why? Because a lot of times, it’s the wrong kind of work. The kind of work that makes you feel good to check a box and say that you did it. Or to be validated, which feels wonderful in the moment, but doesn’t create change.

People who come to us are built on a foundation of stories and behaviors that are rooted in fear, shame, or old survival patterns. Stories that once made them feel safe but are now keeping them from creating the life they desire.

Your truth is hidden behind layers of hurt and fear, and uncovering and reflecting those truths back at yourself is always going to feel scarier than the stories and rationalizations you tell yourself.

Your truth might sound like: “I’m contributing to my child’s addiction so I can feel a sense of purpose by rescuing them.” Or, “I don’t know who I am if I’m sober.” Or, “I say I want peace, but I choose chaos.”

This kind of honesty can feel brutal, but it’s also the most loving thing you can offer yourself. When you stop living inside your stories and explaining away your pain, you’re able to transform your life.

At Recovery Consultants, our job isn’t to fix you. It’s to help you see yourself. With tenderness, with truth, and without judgment. Once that happens, you can make empowered decisions instead of fear-based ones. This is where your freedom lives.
