Hello,

Do you remember what it was like to be a kid? The excitement was hardly contained and we lived life FULLY. Pumping your legs on the swings until you get the highest point, only to jump right then. Breaking out into spontaneous dance. Singing at the top of your lungs. Running as fast as you could because you couldn’t wait to get there. Maybe you had an imaginary best friend or a favorite story that inspired you about who you wanted to be when you grew up. To me, life seemed so vibrant as a kid, so alive and full of possibilities.

Then one day, we wake up and the world can seem to have lost its sparkle. This can be because we have forgotten those wild fantasies. For some, the 9-to-5 grind and routine have replaced all sense of endless possibilities. We decide the world is a place that is fully known and we already know our place in it. Fairytales don’t exist and magic is gone.

But is that really the case?

I am a FIRM believer in perception making up reality. As we grow, we learn to root ourselves in objectivism and say the world is this way or that. Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t a terrible thing. We have to start somewhere to learn and grow and this can serve us well for a time. However, the world doesn’t have to stay the way we believe it is. It can be anything. It can become better.

Being Mindful

The first step to becoming fully alive is being mindful. So much in modern society is automated, streamlined, eye-catching, and busy–distracting us from ourselves. If we take a moment each day to be mindful and acknowledge ourselves and our surroundings, it can help us disconnect. Focus on your breathing, the way something feels or looks. For some, journaling and meditation each morning or evening helps them break away from the world and re-evaluate how they’re doing. This is the first step to becoming fully alive.

As I have talked about before, there can be things in life that are scary. Fear is a big motivator and unfortunately, it can make us decide that we aren’t capable of things. Fear of how others may react can control our lives so much. Learning to let go is freeing and can be a great step to leading the life you want and experiencing it to the fullest.

I challenge you to add something to your routine that helps you connect with that feeling of being fully alive and how exhilarating life can be. Sing in the shower (yes, even if you have roommates!), walk barefoot outside, go in the ocean, go on a vacation to somewhere new, and turn the radio up!! All of these things can help us break free from the monotony of daily life and bring the vibrant colors back that we once saw in the world.
